Have you ever looked at your chickens and wondered what they were thinking? Chickens may not speak our language, but they certainly have a lot to say. The way they look at us, run toward us, complain, and even follow us around makes you wonder what they would say if they could actually talk. And if chickens could talk, we have a feeling they would have plenty of opinions!
Hello there, I’m Farmer Ron and I have raised chickens for over 20 years. And I like to share the joys and lessons that my chickens have taught me over the years. I do that at Chicken Yard Dad Jokes. Come by and visit!
And if chickens could talk, we have a feeling they would have plenty of opinions!
“Where Is My Breakfast?”
The first thing you would probably hear every morning is: “Excuse me! Where is breakfast?”Chickens have a schedule, and they expect us to follow it. Open the coop a little later than usual, and suddenly you have a group of feathered alarm clocks staring at you. They don’t care if you’re tired. They don’t care if it’s cold. They don’t care if you haven’t had your coffee yet. Breakfast is breakfast! And if you are late?
“The customer service around here is terrible!”
“I Saw You With That Bag!”Chickens have amazing hearing when treats are involved. You can quietly open a bag of feed from halfway across the yard, and suddenly chickens appear from everywhere. You might think they were nowhere around.
Then you hear: “Did somebody say TREATS?
”Before you know it, the entire flock is running toward you. Apparently, chickens have their own version of a neighborhood watch. They know everything that happens in the backyard.“Why Does SHE Get That?”Chickens can be surprisingly competitive. Give one chicken a treat, and the others immediately want to know why they didn’t get one.
“Hey! I saw that! Where’s mine?”Give another chicken some attention, and suddenly everyone wants attention. It doesn’t matter if you have ten chickens or two. Somebody always thinks somebody else is getting more. Sounds a little like people, doesn’t it?
"I’m Not Bossy. I’m the Boss.”
Every flock has one. You know the chicken. She walks around like she owns the place. She decides where everyone should stand, where everyone should eat, and probably believes she should be in charge of the entire backyard. If she could talk, she might say: “I don’t have an attitude. I have leadership skills.” Of course, the other chickens might have a different opinion!
“What Are You Doing?”
Chickens are naturally curious. Working in the garden? They want to know what you’re doing. Carrying a bucket? They want to inspect it. Moving something around the yard? They need to investigate immediately. You could probably build an entire chicken mansion, and they would still be more interested in whatever you are holding. Their motto seems to be: “If you have it, I need to inspect it.”
“I Laid an Egg. You’re Welcome.”
Then there is the egg announcement. Some hens seem to believe laying an egg deserves a celebration. And honestly, they may have a point. After all, they did their job.So they might proudly announce: “I made an egg today. You may thank me later.”Then they walk away like they just completed an important business deal.
Chickens Make Life More Fun
If chickens could talk, our backyards would probably be a whole lot noisier. They would complain about breakfast, demand treats, question everything we do, and make sure we knew exactly what they thought about our chicken-keeping skills.
But that’s part of what makes chickens so much fun.
They each have their own personality. Some are friendly. Some are bossy. Some are curious. Some are a little dramatic. And some seem to think the entire backyard belongs to them. Maybe they can’t actually talk, but sometimes their actions say enough. And if you listen closely, you might just hear: “Life is better with chickens!”And we couldn’t agree more. After all, who needs television when you have a chicken yard full of personalities?
