Chicken Personalities: Which One Lives in Your Coop?

Have you ever noticed that chickens have very different personalities? If you have more than one chicken, you already know the answer is yes! One chicken may be sweet and friendly, while another acts like she owns the entire yard. Some chickens are curious. Some are bossy. Some are always getting into trouble. And then there is that one chicken who seems to think she is the star of the show. Chickens may all have feathers, two legs, and a beak, but they definitely don’t all act the same!

Hello there, I’m Farmer Ron, and I have raised chickens for over 20 years. And I like to share the joys and lessons that my chickens have taught me over the years. I do that at Chicken Yard Dad Jokes. Come by and visit!

So, which chicken personality lives in your coop?

The Boss

Every flock seems to have a boss. You know who she is. She walks around like she owns the place. She decides where everyone should eat and probably thinks the nesting boxes are her personal property. If she could talk, she might say: “I’m not bossy. I’m just management.” The boss chicken doesn’t need an office. The whole chicken yard is her office!

The Treat Inspector

This chicken knows exactly when you have treats. You can walk outside carrying a bag that doesn’t even make much noise, and somehow she knows. She comes running. Then the rest of the flock follows. The Treat Inspector doesn’t care what you’re doing. She has one question: “Is that food?” If the answer is yes, you suddenly have a very interested audience.

The Curious One

Some chickens have to investigate everything.Move a bucket? She needs to see it. Work in the garden? She needs to inspect your work. Bring something new into the yard? She’ll be there before you can put it down. She probably believes that nothing should enter her chicken yard without going through her inspection process. Her favorite saying would be: “If you have it, I need to see it.

The Drama Queen

Then there is the chicken who makes everything a big event.Drop something? Drama. Move her favorite perch? More drama. Close the coop door? You would think you had ruined her entire day. She doesn’t simply complain. She makes sure the whole flock knows about it. “Everyone remain calm! Something has happened!” Of course, five minutes later, she has completely forgotten about it.

The Sweetheart

Not every chicken is bossy or dramatic. Some are just sweet. These are the chickens that enjoy being around you. They may come running when they see you and happily follow you around the yard. They seem to have figured out that humans are pretty useful creatures. Humans provide food, water, treats, and shelter. That’s a pretty good relationship!

The Trouble Maker

And then there is the chicken who always seems to find trouble. She discovers the hole in the fence. She gets into the garden. She knocks something over. She finds the one place she isn’t supposed to be. And somehow, she always looks completely innocent afterward. “Who, me? I didn’t do anything.” Sure you didn’t!
